Exercising into the New Year
At Boclair Care Home, we’ve started the year on a high note, prioritising health and wellbeing with activities that support our residents in staying strong, mobile, and independent. Our weekly Yoga with Ashley sessions, combined with additional exercise classes led by our Activity Coordinators, Scott and Bette, are designed to help residents maintain an active lifestyle while having fun and building confidence.
Staying physically active is one of the most effective ways to prevent falls, which are a leading cause of injury among older adults. Regular exercise improves muscle strength, flexibility, and balance—key factors in maintaining stability and reducing the likelihood of trips or slips. According to NHS guidelines, activities such as yoga and strength-based exercises can enhance coordination, promote better posture, and build core strength, all of which are crucial in keeping residents steady on their feet.
Falls can also have a significant emotional impact, leading to a loss of confidence or a fear of further accidents. Our gentle, tailored fitness sessions help to combat this by gradually improving residents' abilities and fostering a sense of accomplishment. For example, our yoga classes focus on gentle stretching and controlled movements, while the exercises with Scott and Bette include practical strength-building activities that are easy to incorporate into daily life.
As well as reducing the risk of falls, staying active offers a host of other benefits to older people. It helps to maintain a healthy weight, reduces the risk of chronic conditions such as arthritis and osteoporosis, and improves cardiovascular health. Exercise has also been shown to boost mood and mental health by releasing endorphins, often referred to as "feel-good" hormones. These benefits contribute to a better quality of life, helping our residents stay independent for longer.
At Boclair Care Home, we’re committed to ensuring that our residents feel supported in their journey to staying strong, mobile, and confident. Whether it’s enjoying yoga with Ashley or participating in group exercises with Scott and Bette, every activity is designed with their wellbeing in mind.
